Southampton; Isle of Wight. Inq. 24 November, 11 Edward III.

Gatecombe. The manor (extent given), with its members of Whitewelle and Cawelbourn, held of the king in chief by service of four knight’s fees, as of the castle of Caresbrok, and by suit at the court of knights of Nyeuport.

Whitewelle. The manor (extent given).

Cawelbourn. The manor (extent given).

Helesye. The manor (extent given) held of the king in chief, as of the castle of Porcestre, by grand serjeantry, viz. finding a man ….. armed with a haqueton, a bacinet, iron gloves, lance, and long knife, to stay in the said castle of Porchestre in time of war, at his own charges, for forty days.


John his son, aged 13 on 13 June, 11 Edward III, is his next heir.


Letter from the archbishop of Canterbury, agreeing that Joan late the wife of John de Isle of Gatecombe, should be dowered of the manors of Whitewell and Cawelbourn, and that what was lacking of her dower in the said manors should be provided for her in the manor of Gatecoumbe, and appointing John de Langetoft, his attorney. Croydon, 14 March. (French.)


Extent or summary of the above manors; and it is noted that the manors of Whitewell and Cawelbourn are dower and that there is assigned for the dower of the aforesaid Joan 114s. in the manor of Gatecombe.

Joan del Isle, of Gatecombe.

Writ, 6 August, 23 Edward III.

Isle of Wight. Inq. taken at Neuport, Saturday after the Assumption, 23 Edward III.

Whitewell and Caulborne. The manors, held by way of dower by the death of John de Insula, formerly her husband, who held of the king as of the honour of the castle of Caresbrouk by knight’s service.

She held nothing of other lords in the said Isle.


She died on Sunday after St. James last. John son of John del Isle of Gatcombe, aged seven years at the feast of St. Leonard next, is her heir.


Joan, late the wife of Henry Romeyn.

Writ, 22 September, 23 Edward III.

Sussex. Inq. taken at Lurdyngton, 26 September, 23 Edward III.

Lurdyngton. The manor held for life of the gift of Henry, parson of the church of Gatecombe, with remainder to John, son of John de Insula, who died a year ago, and his heirs. The said manor is held of John Engayne, knight, by service of a knight’s fee and a pair of gloves at Easter.

Compton. Certain tenements in the town held for life of the gift of the aforesaid Henry, with remainder to John, son of John de Insula, who died as above. The said tenements are held of the heirs of Edmund de Sancto Johanne, who died a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a quarter of a knight’s fee, and doing suit of court at the manor of Halnenaker, which is in the hand of Michael de Ponynges, every three weeks.

She held no other lands &c. in the county.


She died on 27 August, 23 Edward III. John, son of John de Insula her son, aged 6 years at the feast of St. Leonard last, is her heir.
