Commentary
Jane’s parentage:
Jane appears with her husband James in two censuses in North Meols/Southport. This is the information given about her date and place of birth:
1841 (taken 6 June): age 35, born in Lancashire. [Ages in this census were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.]
1851 (taken 30 March): age 48, born Lancashire, Southport.
The probable informant in both censuses was James Molineux.
The record of Jane’s marriage (19 May 1823 in North Meols) gives her surname as Ball.
The 1840 will of Richard Ball of Southport, yeoman, names his daughter “Jane Molinuex the wife of James Molineux of Southport aforesaid Painter”.
Taken together, the above evidence is sufficient to identify Jane’s baptism (3 April 1803 in North Meols). The baptism record identifies her parents as Richard Ball and Hannah. Hannah’s marriage record identifies her surname as Jackson.
February 2025 update:
There is very good DNA evidence that Jane’s parents were Richard Ball and Hannah Jackson. I am a paper-trail descendant of Jane. I share DNA with several well documented paper-trail descendants of Jane's siblings: three descendants of Jane’s brother William (13 cM over 1 segment , and 2 x 10 cM over 1 segment); one descendant of Jane’s brother Richard (14 cM over 1 segment); five descendants of Jane’s sister Hannah (16 cM over 2 segments, 21 cM over 2 segments, 35 cM over 3 segments, 25 cM over 2 segments, 27 cM over 2 segments - although the last two were children of the 35 cM person); and three descendants of Jane’s brother John (12 cM over 1 segment, 13 cM over 2 segments, 13 cM over 1 segment).
