Commentary
Hannah’s parentage:
Hannah’s 20 April 1821 burial record gives her age at death as 54. This is consistent with the baptism recorded at St Cuthbert’s 1 June 1766 of Hannah daughter of William and Mary Jackson. There is no other baptism of a Hannah Jackson near North Meols in the period.
The 5 February 1822 will of William Jackson of South Hawes, fish dealer, names his daughter Hannah Ball among other children. This is a little odd as his daughter was buried the previous year, and William specifically notes that his son John is deceased, but does not note this of Hannah. But I think the provisions of the will can account for this. The will names William’s children and Mary, the daughter of his late son John, and provides that if any of these should die in William’s life, then their share is not to lapse but to go to their lawful issue. William’s son John drowned at the age of 27 after the birth of his only child, Mary. William’s daughter Hannah, on the other hand, had eight living children at the time of William’s will, and wording the will in the way he did would make it unnecessary to name all of them.
William and Mary Jackson’s eldest child was baptized 23 September 1764 at St Cuthbert’s. The register records the married 26 February 1764 of William Jackson and Mary Stones.
There is supporting DNA evidence that William Jackson and Mary Stones are Hannah’s parents. I am a paper-trail descendant of Hannah, and I share DNA with descendants of several paper-trail descendants of Hannah’s sisters: a descendant of Jennet (16 cM over 1 segment); 6 descendants of Alice (15 cM over 2 segments, 9 cM over 1 segment, 10 cM over 1 segment, 9 cM over 1 segment, 12 cM over 1 segment, 10 cM over 1 segment); a descendant of Mary (11 cM over 1 segment); and a descendant of Betty (13 cM over 1 segment). I have checked the trees and the lines are well documented, and the most plausible explanations for all of them are a common descent from William Jackson and Mary Stones. However, none of the segments are very long, so it is possible that some of the matches are due to another relationship. This is especially likely in North Meols, which in general has such a tangled genealogical history.
