Commentary
John’s parentage
The 1754 lease in the Evidence section makes clear that John’s father was Adam Crompton of Little Leaver, papermaker. The Bolton parish register records the baptism in 1717/8 of John, son of Adam and Alice Crompton of Little Leaver. The date fits well with John’s 1739 marriage date. Adam Crompton of Little Leaver, papermaker, names his son John Crompton and his wife Alce in his 1737 will. Adam Crompton married Alice Heap in Bolton in 1707. This marriage must be the correct one, as Adam and Alice named one of their sons “Heap”.
