Commentary
Alice’s parentage
Alice was married in 1707 and her youngest, or perhaps second-youngest, child was baptized in 1732. Her residence at the time of her marriage was Prestwich. This information suggests that we should be looking for someone born in about 1685 close to Prestwich. Only one baptism meets these conditions: in 1685 in Prestwich, father Thomas Heape, abode Outwood.
A few pieces of evidence show that Thomas’s wife was Ellen Dixon. The Ringley parish register records the burial in 1730 of “Ellen Wife of Thomas Heap of Ringleyfold”. The 1697 will of John Dixon of Prestwich names his sister, Ellen Heape. A Thomas Heap married Ellen (the name is hard to read in the register) Dixon in Middleton in 1679, two years before Thomas’s eldest child was baptized in Prestwich.
