John’s will (made 1668, proved 1677):


In the name of: God Amen the 25th day of August in the twentyeth yeare of the Raigne of our Sou’raigne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland france and Ireland King defender of the fayth and in the yeare of our lord God one thousand six hundred sixty eight, I John Bembowe of Glyntref=nant in the p[ar]ishe of Trefeglwys and Countye of Mountgomery being sicke & weake in body but of sound senses & p[er]fect memory all laud & prayse be to allmighty god doe make & ordaine this my last will & testament in manner and forme followeing, Inprimis I commend my soule to the hands of my Redeemer by whose merits alone I trust I shall be saved, and my body to be interred in xtian buryall in the p[ar]ishe church of Trefeglwys at the discretion of my Executrix herein hereafter named and as for my goods & p[er]sonal estate I dispose of them as followeth first I give and bequeath unto my eldest sonne John Bembowe Cler’ the sum[m]e of twelve pence Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne roger Bembow the sum[m]e of twelvepence Item I give & bequeath unto my daughter Anne the wife of John Ashton the sum[m]e of twelvepence, which sd Legacyes my will is that they be payd wthin the space of a twelvemoneth after my decease, and as for the Rest of my goods Cattells & Chattells I give them unto mary my wellbeloved wife desireing her to dispose of them carefully as she shall see needfull & convenient amongst my four younger Children Edward Bembowe, Charles Bembowe, Richard Bembowe & Ivan Bembowe, and Lastly I doe nominate & appoint Mary my sd wife to be sole executrix of this my last will & testament In wittnesse whereof I have hereunto put my hands and seale the day & yeare above written./

In the name of God Amen the fowre & twentith day of March, in the one & twentith yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles the second by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France, & Ireland King defender of the fayth &c. and in the yeare of our Lord God, one thousand, six hundred, sixty & eight, I John Benbowe Cler. vicar of the p[ar]ishes of Llangirricke, & Trevegloes in the County of Mountgomery & Diocesse of Bangor, being sicke, & weake in body but of sound & perfect memory, all laud & prayse bee to almighty God for the same, doe make this my last will & testam.t in mann.r & forme Following; Imprimis I commend my soule, to the h[...] of my redeemer by whose merrits alone I trust I shall be sa[...] & my body to bee buryed in the p[ar]ish Church of Trevegloes in Christian buriall according to the discression of my executrix heerein hereafter named, and as for my worldly goods, Cattells, & Chattells I dispose of them as followeth, first I give, & bequeath, unto my sonne John Benbowe all my bookes, And as for the rest of my goods, Cattells, & Chattells, my will is that after my debts, & Funerall expences are dischardged they bee equally devided into three parts, one parte whereof, I give & bequeath unto my wellbeloved wiefe, Dorothy Benbowe, another parte thereof, I give & bequeath unto my sonne John Benbowe, and the remaining third parte I give and bequeath unto my daughter Dorothy Benbowe, And my will further is that my said wiefe Dorothy Benbowe shall have the use, & benefitt, of my two said childrens legacies to maintaine & bring them up Christianly during theire minority, but, & if, shee intermarry wth. another my will is that the overseers of this my will hereafter named, take the chardge & care of my two children abouesaid and the ordering & disposing, of theire legacies bequeathed unto them, towards theire further educac’on Item my will is that if it please God that both of my children departe this naturall liefe, before they attaine to the full age of one & twenty years out of theire legacies I giue, & bequeath, unto my said deare wiefe Dorothy Benbowe the sum[m]e of sixty pounds Item I giue, and bequeath out of the same, unto my sister Anne the wiefe of John Ashton the [...] of twenty shillings, the rest, & residue of theire said legacies if they dye within the time prescribed, I giue & bequeath unto my brothers Roger Benbowe, Edward Benbowe, Charles Benbowe, Richard Benbowe, and my sister Joan Benbowe to be equally divided amongst them, Item I doe earnestly desire my well beloved uncle Richard Powell of Kington in the County of Hereford, my well beloved Father in lawe Richard Wilson, my well beloved uncle Robert Wilson my well beloved brother in lawe John Wilson, & my loving brother Edward Benbowe to be overseers of this my last will and testam.t beseeching them to be assistant, & helpfull to my deare & loving wiefe, & carefull of my two infants, & lastly I doe constitute, & appoynt my said wiefe Dorothy Benbowe to be sole executrix of this my last will & testam.t In Wittnes whereof I haue hereunto putt my hand & seale the day & yeare within written./
