John Davill

Events

(possible) Date of Baptism: 9 March 1712/13.

(possible) Place of Baptism: St Michael’s, Stone.

This baptism, which is recorded in the parish register, is in the right place and (probably) the right time, but I am still not very confident that it is correct.

(probable) Date of Burial: 30 August 1752.

(probable) Place of Burial: St Michael’s, Stone, Staffordshire.

The burial is recorded in the parish registers.

Relationships

(possible) Father: William Davill.

This is the father recorded in the possible baptism given above.

(possible) Mother: unknown.

Spouse: Mary.

This relationship is recorded in the baptism records of Mary’s children.

Spouse: Sarah Hind. Married 5 February 1732/3 in St Michael’s, Stone.

This relationship is recorded in the parish registers. The timing of the the marriage a few months after the death of John’s first (or previous) wife Mary makes it seem probable (although far from certain) that John ‘s marriage to Sarah was his second marriage.

Spouse: Mary Wright. Married 30 April 1744 in St Michael’s, Stone.

The marriage is recorded in the parish register. Again, the timing of the marriage a few months after the death of John’s previous wife makes it seem likely that John remarried Mary Wright after Sarah’s death.

Children (by Mary):

Mary Davill (baptized 12 April 1730 in Stone) married William Degg 10 June 1747 in Chebsey, Staffordshire.

Samuel Davill (baptized 30 April 1732 in Stone - buried 23 October 1773 in Stone) married Mary Boulton 15 October 1754 in Trentham.

Children (by Sarah):

Sarah Davill (baptized 3 February 1733/4).

James Davill (baptized 3 October 1735).

Commentary

A John and Ann Davill had a daughter, Ann, baptized at Stone in 1726/7. The mother Ann died in 1728, and the daughter probably died in 1740. If this John is identical with the John of this page, and (the first) Mary is John’s second wife, then the 1712 baptism given here for John is probably wrong. Part of the reason for the uncertainty is that I have not yet found a record of the marriage of John and Mary.

Also, the 1712 baptism can only be correct if a John baptized in Stone in 1723 (father William) belonged to a different family. This seems likely. No children with father William were baptized in Stone between 1713 and 1719. The children baptized up to 1713 have no mother named. The mother of the child baptized in 1719 and of the John baptized in 1723 was named Hannah. This Hannah was probably buried in Stone in 1769, aged 75, making her a little young to be the mother for the earliest baptisms (although not impossibly so).

If John's father was not William, then John was probably an older half-brother of William.
