A Memorial of an Indenture of four parts bearing even date herewith and made between Luke Adamson of Lofthouse in the County of York Cordwainer Son of Thomas Adamson late of Lofthouse aforesaid Weaver deceased and a Devisee named in his last Will and Testament and Elizabeth Adamson of Lofthouse aforesaid Widow of the said Thomas Adamson and also a Devisee named in his last Will and Testament) of the one part George Adamson of Lofthouse aforesaid Staymaker also a Son of and a Devisee named in the last Will and Testament of the said Thomas Adamson deceased of the second part William Watson of Lofthouse aforesaid Joiner of the third part and Thomas Adamson (Son of the said Thomas Adamson deceased of Lofthouse aforesaid Weaver of the fourth part of and Concerning all those Messuages or Dwellinghouses with the Garth Orchard or parcel of Ground thereunto belonging and adjoining situate lying and being in North Lofthouse aforesaid in the said County of York and bounded by the House and Lands of Thomas Herbert towards the West by the House and Lands of the Right Honourable Thomas Lord Dundass and part of the Waste Street or Dam towards the East by other part of the said Waste Street or Dam towards the South and by the Church Yard towards the North all which said Premises are now in the Occupation of the said William Watson George Adamson and Luke Walton [sic] their undertenants or Assigns together with the Appurtenances which said Indenture is attested by Minis Jordan of Lofthouse aforesaid Yeoman and John Wardell of Guisbrough in the said County of York Gentleman and is required to be Registered by the said Luke Adamson as Witness his hand and Seal the Twenty fourth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and one Signed and Sealed in the presence of {Minis Jordan John Wardell (Sworn) Luke Adamson [seal]

This Indenture made the first day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eight Between Thomas Adamson of North Lofthouse in Cleveland in the County of York Weaver the Eldest Son and Heir at Law and also a Devisee named in the last Will and Testament of Thomas Adamson late of North Lofthouse aforesaid Weaver deceased of the one part and George Adamson of North Lofthouse aforesaid Staymaker of the other part Whereas the said Thomas Adamson the Father made and duly executed his last Will and Testament in Writing bearing date on or about the Twenty sixth day of April one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight and thereby Gave and Devised to his Son the said Thomas Adamson party hereto amongst other things the Messuages or Dwelling Houses Shop Garth and Hereditaments hereinafter particularly described and mentioned and intended to be hereby Granted and Conveyed and afterwards departed this Life without having revoked or altered the same And Whereas the said George Adamson hath contracted and agreed with the said Thomas Adamson party hereto for the absolute purchase of the Messuages or Tenements Shop Garth and Premises hereinafter particularly mentioned and described and intended to be hereby Conveyed at or for the price of Sum of one hundred and Ten Pounds Now this Indenture Witnesseth that in Consideration of the sum of one hundred and Ten Pounds of lawful English Money to the said Thomas Adamson party hereto in hand paid by the said George Adamson upon or before the Sealing and Delivery of these presents in full for the Purchase Money the Receipt of which said Sum of one hundred and ten Pounds accordingly he the same Thomas Adamson doth hereby acknowledge and off and from the same and every part thereof doth acquit Release and for ever discharge the said George Adamson by these presents He the said Thomas Adamson party hereto hath Granted Bargained Sold Aliened Release Enfeoffed and Confirmed and by these presents Doth Grant Bargain sell Alien Release Enfeoff and Confirm unto the said George Adamson and his Heirs All these Messuages or Tenements formerly in one Messuage or Tenement, and Blacksmith’s Shop with the Orchard behind the same containing in length from North to South seventy eight Feet and in Breadth at the South end or Front thereof thirty seven Feet and at the North end thereof eighteen feet And also all that piece or parcel of Ground whereon the said Blacksmith’s Shop is now erected situate fronting seventy two feet and in Breadth from East to West thirty nine feet be the same several Dimensions little more or less and are bounded on the East by premises belonging to William King and Zachriah Marley Hick on the West by Premises of John Dobson and Robert Chapman on the North by Premises of John Rowland and John Urwin and Zachariah Marley Hick and by the Townstreet of North Lofthouse aforesaid on the South and are now in the Tenure or occupation of John Hardy Elizabeth Atkinson Elizabeth Adamson and John Cass all which said Messuages or Tenements Blacksmith’s Shop orchard piece or parcels of Ground and premises are situate standing and being in the Town Township Parish Precincts or Territories of North Lofthouse aforesaid Together with all Houses Outhouses Edifices Buildings Yards Garths Gardens Ways Paths Passages Waters Watercourses Easements Liberties Privileges Advantages and appurtenances as whatsoever to the said Messuages or Tenements Blacksmith’s Shop Orchard Piece or Parcel of Ground and premises mentionted and intended to be hereby Granted Bargained Sold Enfeoffed and Conveyed every or any part thereof belonging or in any wise appurtaining or therewith now or late held used or enjoyed or accepted reputed deemed taken or known as part parcel or Member thereof as belonging thereunto And the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders Rents Issues and Profits of the same premises And all the Estate Right Title Interest Use Trust Possession Property Claim and Demand whatsoever as well legal as equitable of him the said Thomas Adamson party hereto of into or out of the said Hereditaments and Premises or any part thereof To have and to hold the said Messuages or Tenements Blacksmith’s Shop Orchard piece or parcel of Ground Hereditaments and Premises hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby Granted Enfeoffed and Confirmed with the appurtenances unto the said George Adamson his Heirs and assigns To the use of the said George Adamson his Heirs and Assigns for ever And the said Thomas Adamson party hereto for himself his Heirs Executors and Administrators doth Covenant Promise and Agree to and with the said George Adamson his Heirs and Assigns by these presents in manner following (that is to say) That for or notwithstanding any Act Matter or Thing whatsoever by the said Thomas Adamson or by any person or persons whomsoever lawfully claiming by from under or In Trust for him or by from or under or In Trust for the said Thomas Adamson his Father deceased made done or committed or willingly or willingly suffered to the Contrary he the said Thomas Adamson party hereto now hath in himself good Right full power and lawful and absolute Authority to Convey and Issue the said Messuages or Tenements Blacksmith’s Shop Orchard Piece or Parcel of Ground Hereditaments and premises hereinbefore mentioned and intended to be hereby Granted Enfeoffed and Conveyed with the Appurtenances in manner aforesaid according to the true intent and meaning of these presents

A Memorial of Indenture of Lease and Release the Lease bearing date the day next before the day of the date of the Release and made between George Adamson of North Lofthouse in Cleveland in the County of York Gardener of the one part and Thomas Tease of the same place Painter and Glazier of the other part and the Release being of three parts bearing date the Twenty seventh day of June in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighteen and made between the said George Adamson of the first part the said Thomas Tease of the second part and Isaac Thompson of North Lofthouse aforesaid Blacksmith of the third part and Both of and Concerning all those Messuages & Tenements formerly in one Messuage or Tenement and Blacksmiths Shop) with the Orchard behind the same containing in length from North to South seventy eight feet and in breadth at the South end or front thereof Thirty seven feet and at the North end thereof Eighteen Feet and also all that piece or parcel of ground whereon a Blacksmith’s Shop was then created situated dronting the said Messuages or Tenements containing in length from North to South Seventy two feet and in Breadth from East to West Thirty nine feet be the same several dimensions more or less and are bounded on the East by premises then or then late belonging to William King on the West by premises belonging to John Dobson on the North by premises belonging to John Rowland John Urwin and Zechariah Marley Hick and by the Townstreet of North Lofthouse aforesaid on the South and were then in the several occupations of the said Isaac Thompson and of Mary Alderson as Tenants thereof all which said Messuages or Tenements Shop Orchard and Premises therein and hereinbefore described are situate and being in the Township Parish Precincts or Territorities of North Lofthouse aforesaid and were Purchased by the said George Adamson of his Brother Thomas Adamson Together with all and singular the appurtenances to the said Messuages or Tenements Hereditaments and Premises belonging which said Indentures of Lease and Release as to the due execution thereof respectively by the said George Adamson is witnessed by Thomas Ellerby Hixon of Skelton in Cleveland in the County of York Gentleman and Elizabeth Metcalf of the same place Spinster./.

George’s will:


This is the last Will and Testament of me George Adamson of Lofthouse in the County of York Gardener and Glover made this 18th day of February One thousand eight hundred and forty seven I give the use and enjoyment of all my household furniture Plate Linen and China Beds Bedding Books prints and pictures unto my Wife Elizabeth Adamson during the term of her natural life and at her decease I give and bequeath the same unto my two Granddaughters Mary Ann Adamson and Elizabeth Metcalf to be equally divided between them by my Executor hereinafter named I give and devise unto my Nephew Thomas Adamson of Lofthouse aforesaid Shopkeeper his heirs executors administrators and assigns All my Messuage or Dwellinghouse wherein I now reside with the Tenement adjoining the same in the occupation of John Andrew And also the garden and appurtenances thereunto belonging situate at Lofthouse aforesaid And all other my real estate whatsoever and wheresoever of which I may die seized Upon Trust as soon as conveniently my be after my deceased to sell and dispose of the said hereditaments and premises and real Estate either by public sale or private contract And out of the money to be realized therefrom In Trust in the first place to pay my just debts funeral and Testamentary expenses and the Costs attending the Sale of the said Premises and of making out the Title thereto And I declare and direct that the said Thomas Adamson his executors administrators and assigns shall stand and be possessed of the surplus of the money arising from such sale In Trust to invest the same upon Governnment or real securities at Interest And to pay the dividends or Interest arising therefrom as the same shall come in and and to be received Unto my said Wife Elizabeth Adamson during the term of her natural life and I declare and direct that until such sale as aforesaid shall be made the rents and profits of the said premises shall be paid to my said Wife Elizabeth Adamson Provided always and I declare and direct that if the said Interest or Dividends shall be insufficient for the maintenance and support of my said Wife I hereby empower the said Thomas Adamson his executors administrators and assigns from time to time to call and get in the whole or any part or parts of the said principal received and to pay the whole or such part or parts thereof as he the said Thomas Adamson hsi executors administrators and assigns may in his and their discretion think proper and expedient for and towards the comfortable maintenance and support of my said Wife And I declare and direct that the receipt or receipts of my said Wife for the whole or any part of the said principal monies Interests or dividends shall be a good and sufficient discharge or good and sufficient discharges to the said Thomas Adamson his executors administrators and assigns for such sum or sums of money as shall in such receipt or receipts be expressed to be received And in case there shall be any part of the said Prinicipal money unappropriated at the decease of my said Wife I declare and direct that the said Thomas Adamson his executors administrators and assigns shall stand professed and interested of and in the same In trust for and to be paid equally between and amongst my Son John Adamson and my Grandchildren Mary Ann Adamson Elizabeth Metcalf Elizabeth Ann Adamson and George Bonas Adamson their respective executors administrators and assigns And I declare and direct that the receipt or receipts of the said Thomas Adamson to any purchaser or purchasers or the said hereditaments and premises shall be a good and sufficient discharge or good and sufficient discharges to him or them for the amount therein expressed to be received and that he and they shall not be compelled to see to the application of such purchase money or any part thereof And that it shall be lawful for him the said Thomas Adamson out of the monies which shall come to his hands by virtue of the trusts aforesaid to retain to and reimburse himself All such costs charges or expences as he shall sustain expend or be put unto in or about the execution of the Trusts hereby in him reposed or anywise relating thereto I appoint the said Thomas Adamson Sole Executor of this my Will and I hereby revoke all former Wills In Witness whereof I have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and seal the day and year first within written // George Adamson [seal] // Signed sealed published and declared by the said Testator George Adamson as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and n the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as Witnesses // John Devonshire// John Porritt// Passed 1st October 1849 //
