Commentary

John’s parentage:

John was married in Painswick in 1687/8 and 1692, had children baptized there, and was buried there. The Standish parish register records the baptism of John the son of John and Elizabeth Bates in 1656. Standish is about 6 miles from Painswick, but there is additional evidence that this is the correct baptism. John and Elizabeth had a son Samuel baptized in 1658/9 in Standish, and this Samuel also turns up in Painswick in the 1690s (There are no other Samuel Bates in the indexes in the period.) In his 1689 will, John Bates of Standish, husbandman, names his two sons John and Samuel, leaving them land in Highnam, which is also some distance from Standish.
