Events

Date of Birth: unknown.

Place of Birth: unknown.

Date of Death: 1399.

Place of Death: unknown.

The date is given by Robinson. I am not sure what the primary evidence is.

Relationships

Father: William de Stopham.

This relationship is given by Robinson. It is given in the brass monumental inscription for Joan and her husband, which was created in the 1460s. Robinson says William died in the lifetime of his father, also named William, who died in 1389. He is said to have been of Angmering.

(supposed) Mother: Isabel Covert.

This relationship is given by Robinson, who states that Isabel was of Hascomb and that she married secondly John de Lewknore, who died 29 January 1409. In the Goring pedigree in Elwes (following p. 102), it seems that the authority for this is “a MS pedigree of considerable antiquity, penes Sir Walter Barttelot. Bart.”, which seems a dubious source.

Spouse: John Barttelot.

This relationship is given by Robinson. It is recorded in John and Joan’s brass monumental inscription in the church at Stopham.

Children:

(Complete source citations for facts about the children on this page are currently outside of the scope of this project.)

John Barttelot (died 1453) married Joan Lewknor.

Joan Barttelot (died 14 September 1459) married John Threle.

(possibly) Thomas Barttelot (died 1465) married Joan de Warncamp.

Evidence

from The Topographer (4:347-8):

William de Stopham, of Stopham, left three daughters his coheirs. One probably died single. Isabel married Robert Palmer, Esq. of Steyning, in this county beforementioned [Sussex], and Joan married John Barttelot. Robert Palmer, Esq by indenture, 7 Rich. II. divides his father in law’s estates with the said John Barttelot, by which partition all the lands in Angmering, Beringham, Poling, Ruston, and Preston, with part of the lands in Terring, and Goring fell to Palmer, and Stopham and other estates to Bartlet.
