Óláf Sihtricson (died 1034)

Irish name: Amlaíb mac Sitric


Óláf was son of the king of Dublin. In The Annals of Ulster describe how in 1029 Óláf, called “Amlaíb son of Sitriuc, king of the foreigners”, was held for ransom by Mathgamain ua Riacáin, king of Brega.

The date and place are given by Hudson in his ODNB article. The Annals of Ulster (U1034.2) states that he was killed by the Saxons on his way to Rome.

Mother: Sláine, daughter of Brian Bóruma.

This relationship is given by Hudson in his ODNB article and by Thornton. Her name is only known from The History of Gruffydd ap Cynan § 1 (“Slani hagen, mam avloed vrenhin,oed verch ẏ vrien brenhin muen, dwẏ rann o ẏwerdon.”), but the relationship is confirmed in The Wars of the Gaedhill with the Gaill (pp. 192-193, p. 257). Spouse: Máelcorcre ingen Dúnlaing.
