Sir William l'Engleys

M.P. for Westmorland in 1322, and probably in 1334, 1335, 1336, and 1341 (Washington, p. 45 n). In 1328, William was knighted and appointed Chief Forester of Inglewood (Parker, p. 20).

Ragg (p. 86) suggests that William was a son of a William l’Engleys and Isolda, who appear in Assize Roll 134 (1291-2). He further conjectures that this elder William was the son of Adam, the younger son of William, son of Richard Lengleys and Christiana de Cotesford.

Spouse: Isabel de Warcop. Probably they were married in 1314.

Evidence for this relationship is given below.

Kinsman: William l’Engleys (1280 - 1332).

William is described as le cousyn in the returns to the September 1332 Parliament, when he took over from the previous William L’Engleys as M.P. (Washington, p. 45). The previous William was the second son of Sir Robert l’Engleys.

Pardon to William Lengleys, on account of his good service in Scotland, for the rape of Isabella de Wardecoppe and for robbery committed by him, and also of any other outlawry incurred thereby.

Bedford. Inq. 13 December, 16 Edward II.

Wrastlingworth. A hide of land held of Maud Brian by service of ⅕ knight’s fee, whereof Isabel late the wife of Alexander Crokedaik, uncle of the said John, whose heir he was, holds a third part in dower.

Huntingdon. Inq. 16 December, 16 Edward II.

Little Paxton. Two parts of a messuage, 4l. Rent, 40a. arable, and 2a. pasture, held by the said John; and a third part of the said messuage, 40s. rent, 20a. arable and 1a. pasture, are held by Isabel the wife of William le Engleys of Paxton, in dower, after the decease of Alexander Crokedaik; the said John held the tenements aforesaid of the king in chief by the forfeiture of SIr Robert de Brus by service of ¼ knight’s fee.

Wrastlingworth. A third part of a messuage, and 46 ½ a. land, held as dower of the inheritance of John son of Robert de Hereford co-heir of Adam de Crokedayk, (a minor and in the king’s wardship,) of John Boteler, as of his manor of Hattele, in chief, by service of 1d. yearly, and foreign service. She held no other lands, &c.

The said John son of Robert de Hereford, aged 19 years, is next heir of the said Adam, and concerning the other co-heirs of the said Adam the jury are ignorant.
