Ella Gertrude Adamson

The grandmother of the author of this page. She moved with her family when very young to “Riverside”, a property on the South Branch of the Muskoka River, upriver from Matthiasville and across the river from Uffington. She related to the author of this page that when she was very young, she climbed from a tree onto the roof of the house, and startled her mother by flapping her arms and shouting “I’m an angel! I’m an angel!” She was a school teacher for a few years before getting married, teaching in one-room school houses and often commuting several miles over rough forest roads by bicycle. Our Family History (p. 129) relates that she was the only girl in the family to ride a bicycle. She also had a horse named Betsey. When she first started teaching, her oldest pupil was only two years younger than her. After getting married she moved to Bracebridge, Ontario, where she lived on Manitoba Street for many years. She sang in the choir at Uffington, and later at St Thomas’ Anglican Church, Bracebridge.

Events

Date of Birth: 26 March 1897.

Place of Birth: “Salem Corners”, Pickering Township, Ontario County, Ontario, Canada.

Her date of birth is given in her birth registration. Her marriage registration gives her place of birth as “Pickering”. The 1901 census gives 26 March as the month and date of her birth, but incorrectly gives 1896 as the year. (It correctly gives her age as 4. The census began on 31 March 1901). The 1911 census gives her birth date as March, 1897. Our Family History (p. 27) gives her birth date as March 26th, 1897, and her birth place as “Salem Corners”. Ella Gertrude Adamson’s daughter agrees that 26 March 1897 is the correct birth date. The author of this page recalls Ella Gertrude Adamson stating that she was born at “Salem Corners”. The property was at the south-west corner of what is now the intersection of Highway 7 and Salem Road.

Date of Death: 5 January 1991.

Place of Death: Ingersoll, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.
