The Sussex Family History Group and Salmon (1912) give a transcription of the parish register. The burial is also given by Renshaw (p. 221). The incorrect date of 1579 was given on a monument.

Richard mentions his son, Edward, in his will. The relationship is given by Renshaw (p. 221) and by the Victoria County History of Sussex (7:243).

Mother: Mary de la Chambre (died 1552).

This relationship is given by Renshaw (p. 221), noting that Thomas de la Chambre made “my brother, Richard Scrase, of Bletchington” an overseer of his will. Richard mentions his wife, Mary, in his will.

Edward mentions his wife, Agnes, in his will. Agnes mentions their children in her will.

A transcription of the will of Edward Scrace


In the name of god amen the xxvith daye of aprill in the yeare of our Lorde god a thousand fyve hundred seaventie five and in the Eighteneth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Ladye Elizabeth by the grace of god Quene of England France and Ireland Defender of the faythe &c, I Edward Scrace of Bletchington Weyfeild in the Countie of Sussex gent beinge sicke in bodye and p[er]fect in remembrannse thanks be gyven unto god do make ordayne and dispose of this my laste will and testamente revokinge all other before this tyme, made in manner and forme followinge, First I bequeathe my Sowle unto almightie god my maker and redeamer my bodye to be buried in the p[ar]ishe churche of Preston and in consideration thereof I do gyve to the p[ar]ishe of Preston xiiis iiid, Item I gyve to the p[ar]ishe of Hove xs, Item I gyve [sic], Item I gyve to John my younger Sonne Twentye Poundes a yeare to be payed unto him out of my farme of Bleatchington so longe tyme as I have intereste in the farme, Item I gyve unto Agnes my wife vjli xiiis iiijd a yeare so longe tyme as I have interest in the farme yf she do not enioye all my coppye holdes or anye of them, And yf she enioye anye of my coppyeholdes then the vjli xiiis iiijd a yeare before gyven to sease and be voyde, Item I gyve unto Jone Denham my daughter twentie poundes, The residue of my goodes my debts beinge payed and legacies p[er]formed, I do gyve unto Richard my eldeste sonne whome I make my whole executor of this my laste will and tesaments, Item my will and meaninge is that Edwarde Covert of the Ynner Temple in London gent shall have the bringinge up of my sonne Richarde untill he cometh to the age of twentie one yeares, and furder my will and meaninge is that the saide Edward Covert shall have the whole doinge and executinge of this my will to the use of my sonne Richard, and shall do all things that dothe p[er]teyne to this my will in my sonne Richards name untill he cometh to the Age of one and Twentye yeares yf it maye be by lawe and the saide Edward Covert shall allowe hym selfe for all his paynes charge and expense oute of my goodes when my sonne Richarde cometh to the aige of one and Twentye years makinge an Accompte unto my sonne Richarde. Item my will and meaninge is that yf the said Edwarde Coverte in whome I put my whole truste do get mennes illwill in executinge of this my will And that my will be anye greate hinderance tothe saide Edwarde Coverte in executinge of it, That then my will is that the saide Edwarde Coverte shall take for his paynes deserved in this my will so muche as he shall thinke meete in his owne conscience for my meaninge is not that the saide Edwarde shall in anye wise be hindred by this my will, In witness hereof I have setto my hande and seale, By me Edward Scrase sealed and signed in the presence of Thomas Bearde Richard Tester Henrye Averye and Rauffe Beche
