Samuel’s parentage.
Samuel’s eldest child was baptized in Kirby Grindalythe in 1738. There is a baptism of a Samuel Adamson recorded in Birdsall in 1709/10. The date is reasonable, and I have found no other baptism of a Samuel Adamson in the area in the correct time period.
An additional piece of evidence suggesting that this baptism is correct is that a Catherine Adamson, widow, was buried in Kirby Grindalythe in 1753. The mother of the Samuel baptized in Birdsall was named Catherine Beal. She married the father, Arthur Adamson, in Birdsall in 1705. It would make sense that Catherine was living with Samuel in her later years. Her husband had died in 1742, buried in Birdsall, and evidence from the registers suggest that the family was not well off. Catherine was Arthur’s second wife, and Arthur’s older children were products of the first marriage. Samuel may have been the natural child of Catherine best able to support her.
Samuel was likely named after Catherine’s father, who was named Samuel.
