Commentary
From the evidence in the Evidence section, it appears that there were two Roger Naylors in the area in the period:
Roger son of Robert Naylor born in 1707.
Roger son of James Naylor born in 1709.
Both were baptized in Ashton in Makerfield and both were buried in Winwick. It is clear that (b) is the Roger of this page, since James had a son named Seth, which is a name that the Roger of this page gave one of his sons.
It appears that (a) remained at Ashton while (b) lived in Newton. Most of the evidence above can be sorted with confidence:
Roger Naylor
-born 1707, baptized in Ashton in Makerfield
-children: Thomas (buried 1739 in Winwick); Thomas (baptized 1740 in Ashton, buried 1761 in Winwick)
-died 1779, buried in Winwick
Roger Naylor
-born 1709, baptized in Ashton in Makerfield
-wife named Elizabeth
-children: Ann (born 1738, baptized in Newton); Ellen (born 1740, baptized in Ashton, abode Newton); Thomas (born 1743, baptized in Newton); Seth (born 1744, baptized in Newton); Joseph (born 1754, baptized in Newton)
-died 1763, buried in Winwick, abode Newton
There is some question about which Roger was the father of William Hill. The baptism was in Newton, which was the abode of William’s mother Martha, but Roger’s abode is given as Ashton.
There is also some question about the marriage with Elizabeth Hammond in 1738 in Newchurch. Elizabeth’s abode was Newton, but Roger’s is given as Ashton. Roger (b)’s wife is known from the baptism records of his children to be named Elizabeth, but the marriage occurred after the 1738 baptism of (b)’s daughter Ann in Newton, and Ann is not recorded as illegitimate.
Roger’s mother:
The Winwick register records the burial 24 November 1741 of “Mary wife of James Naylor of Ashton”.
James’s eldest child was born 25 December 1695 and baptized in Winwick. His later children were baptized in Ashton in Makerfield.
The Disley, Cheshire, parish register and a marriage licence record the marriage in August 1695 of James Naylor of Ashton in the parish of Winwick and Mary Richardson.
