Commentary

Katherine’s parents.

Katherine’s son George names his cousin John Lees of Sandon in his 1824 will.  This John Lees was the son of John Lees and Catherine Hinckley, and Catherine Hinckley was the daughter of John Hinckley and Mary Ward. Mary Ward was probably baptized in 1719 in Uttoxeter. The 1721 baptism of a Katherine Ward in Uttoxeter thus not only agrees exactly in date with the age at death given in Katherine’s burial record, but the place is also consistent with Mary Ward and Katherine Ward being cousins. This would make George Bradshaw and John Lees of Sandon second cousins once removed. I have been unable to discover any other relationship, which would account for George calling John his “cousin”.
