Llywelyn ap Seisyll

Ruler of Gwynedd

Events

Date of Birth: about 965.

This estimated date is given by Bartrum (EVWG Early Series [41]).

Date of Death: 1023.

This date is given by Walker (ODNB). It is recorded in Brut y Tywysogion s.a. 1021 and in Annales Cambriæ s.a. 1023. It is also noted in some of the Irish annals.

Relationships

Father: Seisyll.

This relationship is given by Walker (ODNB) and by Bartrum (EVWG Early Series [41]). It is recorded in Brut y Tywysogion (Williams pp. 34-36) and in Annales Cambriæ s.a. 1023. Seisyll’s origins are unknown.

(possible) Mother: Prawst ferch Elise ab Anarawd.

This relationship is given (tentatively) by Walker (ODNB), who notes that it is given in later genealogies, and by Bartrum (EVWG Early Series [41]). There is some question as to whether she actually existed, or was a later invention.

Spouse: Angharad ferch Maredudd ab Owain.

This relationship is given by Walker (ODNB), by Maund (2000, p. 60), and by Bartrum (EVWG Early Series [41]). Maund (1991, p. 61) states that the link is found in a wide enough variety of sources to be reasonably credible.

Children:

Gruffudd (died 1063) married Ealdgyth, daughter of Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia.
