In 1211, Simon held seven fees of the count of Eu for the service of seneschal in the Rape of Hastings (Keats-Rohan, p. 508).

Keats-Rohan (p. 508) states that in 1242/3 William de Echingham held seven fees in Etchingham of Alice, countess of Eu. Saul (p. 4) gives the date of Simon’s death as about 1244.

Father: William de Etchingham.

This relationship is given by Saul (p. 2), and by the Sussex VCH (9:212).

(presumed) Mother: Ala, daughter of Haimo fitz Mainfelin.

Ala is given as William’s wife by Rosie Bevan in a contribution to “Corrections to KSB Keats-Rohan’s Domesday Descendants”, citing Elvey (p. xlxii).


Spouse: Alice.

This relationship is given by Saul (p. 2).

William de Etchingham (died shortly before 25 March 1253) married Margery de Montagu. William and Margaret left no issue (Wrottesley, p. 75).


Simon de Etchingham (born about 1218  - died before 1268). Simon married Pauline. Simon was his brother William’s heir.

In 1195, Simon de Echingham witnessed a charter of Waleran de Herste granting land to Robertsbridge Abbey.  (p. 45)


In about 1207, Symon de Eching., William and Henry his brothers, witnessed a quitclaim by Richard de Waliland to Robertsbridge Abbey.


In about 1207, Symon de Eching., William his brother, witnessed another quitclaim between the same parties.  (p. 61)


In about 1210, Simon de Eching., William his brother, witnessed a charter of Robert de Waliland granting land to Robertsbridge Abbey. (p. 62)


In about 1216, Symon de Echingeh., William his brother, witnessed a charter of Peter de Scotiniis confirming agreements with the monks of Robertsbridge.  (p. 71)


In 1225, Simon de Echingeham, knight, witnessed a charter of Alice, countess of Eu confirming land to Robertsbridge Abbey.  (p. 83)
