Relationships

Father: Robert Banastre.

This relationship is given by Ormerod (2:574) and by the Lancashire VCH (1:371).

(probable) Mother: Clemence, daughter of Philip de Orreby.

Her name is known to be Clemence/Clemency/Clementia, but her relationship to Philip de Orreby is conjectural. This relationship is given by Ormerod (2:574). Farrer (p. 99) states that in 1219 Philip de Orreby purchased the wardship and marriage of Robert son and heir of Thurstan Banastre for 500 marks. Langton (p. 21) notes that although there is no direct evidence that Philip had a daughter, he would be unlikely to have paid 500 marks unless he intended to marry a daughter of his to Robert. Langton also gives evidence from seals of arms that seems to support this relationship. The Lancashire VCH (1:571) states that Philip paid only 50 marks.

Spouse: Alesia, daughter of Robert de Grendon. Married 1269.

The Lancashire VCH (6:sub Walton-le-Dale) gives Alesia as the wife of Sir Robert. Ormerod (5:574) and the Lancashire VCH (1:372-373, citing Ormerod and Dr. Kuerden’s MSS) give Alice, daughter of Gilbert Woodcock, but the Lancashire VCH (6:sub Walton-le-Dale fn 22) states that this is an error.

Children:

James Banastre married Ellen, daughter of William le Boteler.

Clemency Banastre married William de Lea.
