Commentary

Probably James's relative, possibly his brother, was the John Winstanley who is recorded as a brewer in Shaw Brow and Thomas Street in the 1760s, 1770s, and 1780s. John Winstanley and James Winstanley are both recorded in Sun Fire Insurance records as living in Shaw Brow in 1790 (National Archives MS 11936/366/566475).
