Commentary

On Rosa’s parents

Rosa must descend from the Cludde-Corbet marriage in order to account for her son John’s reference to John Corbet of Leigh as his kinsman. The Salter pedigree in the 1623 Visitation of Shropshire gives her father as William Cludd, and the Cludd pedigree in the same Visitation gives Mary Corbet’s husband as William Cludd with the date 5 H. 6 (1426). However, Herbert (p. 163) gives Mary’s husband as Thomas Cludd, stating he was living 6 Henry VI (1427). I am not sure what the primary evidence says. The Shropshire VCH (v. 11) in its account of Wrockwardine generally follows Herbert. The Nottinghamshire visitation, which Herbert states is in general more reliable than the Shropshire Visitation on this family, gives a nameless Corbet’s husband as Thomas Cludd of Orleton.

I am not sure if is chronologically possible for Thomas Cludde and Mary to have had a son William, who was the father of Rosa.
