James Molineux 1777 - 1834

James was of Dalton (a village five and a half miles from Wigan) at the time of his marriage in 1798. The baptism records of his children show that he worked as a stone mason. He was living at Millgate, Wigan in the early 1800s. In 1821 he was living in Haigh (a village about two and a half miles from Wigan). At the time of his death, he was living in Chapel Lane, Wigan.

Events

Date of Birth: about 1777.

Place of Birth: unknown (probably Aspull).

James’s age was given as 21 on his 1798 marriage allegation and his age at death as 57 in his 1834 burial record.

Date of Baptism: 1 January 1778.

Place of Baptism: Wigan, Lancashire (All Saints).

The baptism is recorded in the parish register.

Date of Burial: 30 June 1834.

Place of Burial: Wigan (All Saints).

The burial is recorded in the parish register. The burial is likely to be the correct one, as the age at death given for James agrees with that given on the marriage bond, and an Elizabeth Molineux, also of Chapel Lane, wife of James Molineux, was buried at Wigan All Saints in 1831. Her age was given as 50.

Relationships

Father: James Molineux.

Mother: Alice Baneford.

James's baptism record gives his parents' names as "James & Alice Mollineux". Alice's marriage record, and the baptism records of some of her younger children, give her maiden name as Baneford (or variations thereof). I give an argument below that these are the correct parents for the James Molineux of this page.

Spouse: Betty Almond (1781 - 1831). Married 8 October 1798 in Wigan (All Saints).

The marriage is recorded in the parish register. The marriage allegation also records the names of the couple and of Betty’s father.

James's Parentage:

I do not have conclusive evidence that proves that the James Molineux of this page is a son of James Molineux and Alice Baneford. I am using this reasoning to place him as a child in this family:

  1. James's marriage and burial records agree in putting his birth in about 1777. A few boys named James Molineux appear in indexes of baptisms (FamilySearch, Ancestry.com, LancashireOnlineParishClerks) in the right time period in the Wigan area, but all except this one either died young or can fairly confidently be placed with other wives and children in the early 1800s, based on residences, occupations, and naming patterns.

  2. James and his wife Betty are recorded as living in Chapel Lane at the time of their deaths in the 1830s. The elder James Molineux, who I am arguing is the father of the James of this page, was living in Chapel Lane at the time of his death in 1837, as was his younger son Isaac. The elder James's brother William is recorded as living in Chapel Lane at the time of his death in the 1820s.
