Commentary
Ralph’s father
A 1573 grant of arms to George Ravenscrofte of Bretton (Green, Hawarden Deeds) gives Ralph’s father as Henry Ravenscrofte.
The 1580 Visitation of Cheshire (Rylands, p. 195) has “Henry Ravenscroft was cosin & heire to Thomas Swetnam”). The informant seems to have been Ralph’s great grandson, George Ravenscroft.
Lewys Dwnn (2:315) gives “Harri Ravenscroft”. Dwnn’s visitation was some time between 1586 and 1613.
In his 1486 will, Henry Ravenyscroft named his son Ralph.
This relationship is accepted by Lloyd (5:266) and by Jenkins (Dictionary of Welsh Biography sub Ravenscroft).
Ralph’s mother
The 1580 Visitation of Cheshire (Rylands, p. 195) gives “...d. to Sr Walter Radcliff. Ravenscroft (p. 4) calls her “Joane, dau. to Sir Walter Radcliffe of Ordesall, Knt.” I have not been able to find Sir Walter or his daughter, Joanna, in accounts of the Radcliffes of Ordsall.
Lloyd (5:266) makes her the daughter of Sir John Radcliffe and Margaret de Trafford, which would seem to be too early and which is contradicted by Hampson (p. 143), who gives Sir John’s daughter Joan two other husbands, but not Henry.
I think the evidence that Ralph’s father was Henry Ravenscroft is reasonable, but I would need more evidence to be confident that his mother was Joan Radcliffe.
