Commentary
Elizabeth’s parentage:
In the 1623 visitation of Surrey (p. 32), Elizabeth’s parents are recorded as “John Bowyer of Camberwll in com. Surrey” and “Elizebeth d. of Rob. Draper of Camberwell.” The informant was Elizabeth’s brother Sir Edmond Bowyer of Camberwell.
These relationships are corroborated in a number of wills:
(1) In his 1569 will, John Bowyer of Camberwell named his daughter Elizabeth Bowier. He also named his wife Elizabeth and mother-in-law Elizabeth Draper. An 1550 entry in John’s memorandum book described “Wedyng apparrell bought for my Wyffe Elizabeth Drap, the Younger of Camerwell”.
(2) In his 1558 will, Henry Draper of Camberwell named “Elizabeth Bowyer my sisters daughter”.
(3) Elizabeth Bowyer was a witness to the 1559 will of William Draper of Camberwell.
(4) In his 1574 will, Matthew Draper named his niece Bynde, daughter of his sister Forster. (Elizabeth Draper married William Forster as her second husband after the death of John Bowyer.)
(5) In his 1617 will, Benjamin Bowyer of Camberwell made bequests to his “cosens” Mr William Bynde, Mr Edward Bynde, and Mr James Bynde (three of Elizabeth’s sons). Benjamin was a son of John Bowyer and Elizabeth Draper. “Cosen” was commonly used in the period to designate a variety of relationships, including “nephew”.
The marriage of John Bowyer and Elizabeth Draper is recorded in a monumenal inscription (Blanch p. 32).
Elizabeth’s will:
John Stanley was Elizabeth's step-son.
