Commentary

On John’s parents

William Sadler and Elizabeth Kilton (or Hilton) were married in Northallerton. This is the information on their children as I reconstruct it.

William: baptized 1718 in Northallerton; buried 1730 in Kirby Sigston.

Elizabeth: baptized 1720 in Northallerton; married 1748 in South Cowton; children baptized in Brompton; buried in Brompton in 1765.

Wilfrid: baptized 1721 in Northallerton; married 1748 in Leake; children baptized in Leake; lived in Borrowby; worked as a wheelwright; buried in 1809 in Leake; left a will. Some websites have this Wilfrid as being of Alne, but this is an error: the Wilfrid who was baptized in 1720 in Alne died as an infant.

Thomas: baptized 1724 in Kirby Sigston. I am not certain what became of Thomas.

John: baptized 1727 in Kirby Sigston; married 1754 in Ainderby Steeple; a child Frances was baptized in South Cowton in 1755; children after 1769 were baptized in Osmotherley; buried in Osmotherey in 1815.

Frances: baptized 1732 in Kirby Sigston; buried 1747 in South Cowton (parents given as William and Eliz.).

I am basing the reconstruction on dates and places.

Of the four children known to have survived:

-the eldest son, Wilfrid, married and lived in Borrowby, about 5 miles from Kirby Sigston.

-the youngest son, John, lived in South Cowton shortly after his marriage, and then eventually moved to Osmotherley, about 4 miles from Kirby Sigston.

-the elder daughter, Elizabeth, married in South Cowton and then moved to Brompton, about 4 miles from Kirby Sigston.

-the youngest daughter, Frances, was buried as a teenager in South Cowton.

Three of the four have a connection to South Cowton in the 1740s/50s, where presumably William and Elizabeth were living at the time. The two survivors of these three ended up not far from Kirby Sigston, as did Wilfrid. It may be significant that there were Kiltons living in Leake and Osmotherley, which is where the two sons Wilfrid and John ended up. (An Elizabeth Kilton was baptized in Osmotherley in 1701 and Leake in 1702.  Another Kilton family lived at Kirby Sigston.  A James Kilton of “Sigston” married in Northallerton in 1719.)

Also, John’s age at the 1727 baptism exactly matches the age given in John’s 1815 burial record (88).
