Relationships

Father: Robert, count of Namur.

This relationship is given by père Anselme (2:755), who calls him Ratbode, and by Genicot (p. 45). Père Anselme and Genicot make Robert the son of Berenger, count of Namur. Cawley states that the relationship between Robert and Berenger is unclear. Borgnet states that Albert is a descendant of Berenger, but the exact relationship is unclear. Rousseau (p. xxix) states that Robert is a descendant of Berenger, but not necessarily in the male line.

Mother: unknown.

Stasser suggests, for onomastic reasons, that she may have been a daughter of Albert, count of Metz, and Liutgarde, daughter of Wigeric, count of Bidgau and Cunegonde. Genicot (p. 45) gives a daughter of the duke of Lotharingia. Rousseau (p. xxxvi) notes that no contemporary document names Robert's wife, but that a late note inserted into the 14th century Continuation of the Chronicle of Saint-Trond gives information which suggests that she was Ermengarde, a daughter of Otto, duke of Lotharingia. Rousseau states, "Le fait en lui-même ne présente aucune invraisemblance", but nevertheless is doubtful about the reliability of the note.

Spouse: Ermengarde. Married 990.

This relationship is given by père Anselme (2:755), by Borgnet, and by Genicot (p. 45, p. 274). Rousseau (p. xlvi) notes that there is no direct contemporary documentation to show that Ermengarde was the daughter of Charles of France, but that, given the evidence which exists, there is no other plausible solution.
