Relationships

Father: Heribert II, count of Meaux, of Soissons, and of Vermandois.

This relationship is given by père Anselme (1:49), by Settipani (p. 230), by Bouchard (p. 18), and by Baldwin.

Mother: a daughter of Robert I, king of France.

This relationship is given by Settipani (p. 230), and by Baldwin, who states that there is no clear documenation for her name. Père Anselme (1:49) calls her Hildebrante, but expresses doubt that the marriage in fact took place: “Cette alliance est suspecte, car il n’y en a pas de preuves assurées.” (Baldwin notes that the relationship is recorded by Flodoard, who states that Heribert’s wife was a sister of Hugues the Great.) Père Anselme also notes that there are problems with consanguinity, since Robert’s wife, Beatrix de Vermandois, was closely related to Heribert. Baldwin notes that Robert’s wife, Beatrix, is no longer accepted by current scholarship to be from the Vermandois family, and, in any case, Heribert’s wife may be the daughter of another wife of Robert. Settipani suggests that her name may have been Adela. Baldwin is skeptical of this possibility.

Spouse: Adélaïde dite Werra, daughter of Giselbert, count of Chalon and of Troyes, duke of Burgundy.

This relationship is given by père Anselme (1:49), by Settipani (p. 232), by Bouchard (p. 53), and by Baldwin.
