The marriage bond gives her age as 22 on 26 November 1817. A newspaper death notice gives her age at death as 45.


Date of Death: 21 November 1839.

The date is given in the description of the probate Mary’s will (on or about 21 November) and in the 30 November newspaper death notice of her death (“Thursday week”, which would have been 21 November.)


Relationships


Father: John Kennedy (1764 - 1832).

The death notice of Mrs. Mary Hinde in the Carlisle Journal gives her father as “Capt. John Kennedy”. In her will, Mary refers to her brother, Robert Kennedy. The will of John Kennedy mentions his daughter "Mary the wife of Samuel Hinde".

Mother: Martha Bell (about 1766 - 1828).

Martha’s name is given in her marriage record.


Spouse: Samuel Hinde (born 1795). Married 17 November 1817 in Whitehaven (St James’).

The marriage is given in the bishop’s transcripts of the parish registers.

A transcription of the will of Mary Hinde


In the Name of God Amen I Mary Hinde of Whitehaven in the County of Cumberland Widow being of sound perfect and disposing Mind Memory and Understanding do make Publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in Manner and form following that is to say I will order and direct all my just debts Funeral and Testamentary expences shall be paid off and discharged by my Executor hereinafter named. I give devise and bequeath unto my two Sons John and Samuel Hinde all those my Shares or Parts of and in all those Freehold Messuages Tenements or Dwelling Houses situate in a Street called Preston Street on the Road leading from Whitehaven aforesaid to the Ginns Also all that my Part or Share of a Dwelling House situate in Queen Street and also all those my Shares or Share of all those Freehold Messuages or Dwelling Houses situate in a Lane near to Mark Lane in the aforesaid Town of Whitehaven Also all other my real Estate whatsoever to hold the same with the Appurtenances unto my said two Sons their Heirs and Assigns for ever as Tenants in common and not as Joint Tennants togeather with all my Household Goods, Furniture, Beds, Bedding, and Linen equally to each share and share alike but in case of Death of either of my above named Sons during my lifetime or afterwards before they become of Age leaving no Issue then the Survivor to be sole Heir to all my before mentioned Property both original and Accruing. I also give and bequeath unto my Nieces the Daughters of my Brother Robert Kennedy all my Cloaths and Wearing Apparel to be equally divided amongst them. And of this my Will I appoint my Brother Robert Kennedy Executor and Trustee to my said two Sons John and Samuel Hinde and in case of both of my Sons dying without leaving any Issue I give and bequeath all the before named Shares of and in all those Dwelling Houses already described togeather with all my Household Goods and Furniture whatsoever both original and Accruing unto my said Brother Robert Kennedy to have and to hold the same solely to Himself his Heirs and assigns forever hereby revoking all former Wills, I declare this only to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said Mary Hinde have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and seal the Twenty Ninth day of May one thousand eight Hundred and thirty nine Mary Hind # Signed Sealed Published and declared by the said Mary Hinde as and for her last Will and Testament in the Presence of us who at her request and in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses

On the ninth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine this Will of Mary Hinde late of Whitehaven in the Paris of St. Bees in the County of Cumberland within the Archdeaconry of Richmond in the Diocese of Chester, widow, who departed this life on or about the twenty first day of November one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine was proved in common form and Robert Kennedy aforesaid the sole executor therein named was sworn well and faithfully to execute and perform the same and so forth and that according to the best knowledge information and belief of the said Robert Kennedy the whole of the goods chattels and credits of which the said testatrix Mary Hinde died possessed within the archdeaconry of Richmond in the Diocese of Chester (exclusive of what the said Testatrix might have been possessed of or intitled to as a Trustee for any other person or persons and not beneficially, and without deducting anything on account of the debts due and owing by and from the saide Testatrix) were under the value of Twenty Pounds

Commentary


Mary’s baptism has not yet turned up, but her family is made clear by her marriage record, her will, and the newspaper death notice of her death.
