The will of John’s son Richard Gamble:


In the name of god, Amen, the forth day of Aprill, one thousand six hundred sixty and eight, and in the twentith year of the rainge of our Sovaraigne lord King Charles the second, of England Scotland France and Ireland King defender of the faith &c. according to the Computation of the Church of England. I Richard Gambwell of little Loxley in the County of Stafford and parish of Uttoxeter yeoman, knowing that there is nothing more sertaine than death, and nothing more uncertaine then the houre of death, being but weak of body, but of perfect memory & remembrance praised be God, doe make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament, in manner and forme following that is, First I bequeath my soule into the hands of Almightly God my Maker, hoping that through the Meritorious death and passion of Jesus Christe my onely Saviour and redeemer to receive free pardon & forgivenesse of all my sinnes; And as for my body to be buried in Christian buriall at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter nominated. Item, I give unto Antony Ward, sonn of my sister Margret Ward the summe of forty pounds of English money. Item I give unto Margret Ward daughter to my Sister Margret the sume of forty poundes  Item, all my houses landes or Tenements and goods whatsoever, I give unto Margret Ward my Sister for the terme of her naturall Life, and twenty pounds to dispose of at her death, and make her sole executrix of this my last will and Testament, revoking all other Wills and Testaments, and to William Willson her eldest sonne after her life, I give all my houses lands or tenements, to him & his heires forever, upon condition, that he shall pay all these my Legacies above nominated within the space of twelve Moneths after he entereth upon the premises, And if it shall happen that the said William Wilson his heires or assignes shall either deny or neglect and be behind with the payment of the said Legacies either in part or in all, I ordaine that then it shall and may be lawfull to and for the said said Antony Ward and Margret his sister ioyntly to sease on & enter into & upon the two Closes meadows or pasture grounds commonly called or knowne by the names of the Broommy Close and Kirphith Close scituate lying or being the one in the parish of Uttoxeter the other in the parish of Kingston & County of Stafford aforesaid, now or late in the tenure or occupation of the said Richard Gambwell or his assignes. To have and to houd the said Closes or Croftes from thence forth forever to them their heires or assignes as their owne proper lands, any thing in these presents contained to the contrary in any waise notwithstanding, And I also ordaine Lawrence Holmes hier heires or assignes overseer to see that this my last will & testament be honestly and truly fullfilled, parformed, & done according to the true intent & meaning of me in these presents, whereby I put him in full power (if the said William Wilson his heires or assignes doe not pay unto the said Antony & Margret their portions of forty pounds a peece & twenty to their mothers assignes, that is fivescore in all, to put the said Antony & Margret in peaceable possession of the before mentioned Closes, and those shall defend them against all persons whatsoever cleaming any title thereunto  In Witness whereof I have put here unto my hand and seale the day & year first above written
