Owain ab Edwin

Events

Date of Birth: about 1040.

This estimated date is given by Bartrum (“Edwin 1”).

Date of Death: 1105.

This date is given by Thornton (ODNB “Owain ab Edwin”). It is recorded in Brut y Tywysogion under the year 1102 (Williams pp. 76-77): “The ensuing year Owain, son of Edwin, died after a long illness.” In Annales Cambriæ the death is recorded under the year 1104 (Williams p. 33).

Relationships

Father: Edwin of Tegeingl.

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (“Edwin 1”), and given by Davies, and by Thornton (ODNB “Owain ab Edwin”). Thornton calls him Edwin ap Gronw. Thornton notes that Edwin “is thought to be the Edwinus who held lands in Tegeingl and south-west Cheshire, both before 1066 and at the time of the Domesday survey, and was probably the most important Welshman at this time in Tegeingl. To this position Owain probably succeeded about 1090.”

Mother: Iwerydd ferch Cynfyn.

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (“Edwin 1”), and given by Maund (p. 95), and by Thornton (ODNB “Owain ab Edwin”).

Spouse: Morwyl ferch Ednywain Bendew.

This relationship is shown by Bartrum (“Edwin 1”) and given by Thornton (ODNB “Owain ab Edwin”).

Children:

(Complete source citations for facts about the children on this page are currently outside of the scope of this project. Most information below comes from Bartrum. Baldwin notes that Morwyl is explicitly said in Bartrum’s source, Achau Brenhinoedd a Thywysogion Cymru, to be the mother of Gronwy, but it is not certain she is the mother of the other children.)

Llywarch (died 1118).

Aldud.

Meilir (died 1125).

Angharad (died 1162) married Gruffudd ap Cynan.

Gronwy (died 1125) married Genilles ferch Hoedlyw.

Cynwrig (died 1139). (Bartrum has a question mark by this relationship.)

Einion (died 1132).

Rhirid (died 1125).

From Guy’s critical edition of the Llywelyn ab Iorwerth genealogies, which were based on an archetype created no later than the first half of the fourteenth century from an original compilation dating to the early thirteenth century, partly based on earlier written sources (Note that Guy is striving for textual rather than genealogical accuracy):
