The date is given by Eyton (9:319). In his brother’s 1380 inquisition post mortem, Thomas is said to be aged 30 years and more.

The date is recorded in Thomas’s inquisition post mortem.


Relationships


Father: Sir Alan de Cherleton.

Mother: Margery FitzAer.

These relationships are given by Eyton (9:319). They are also given in the 1623 Visitation of Shropshire (p. 100). The relationship with Alan is recorded in a bequest in the 1376 will of Humphrey de Cherlton (Testamenta Eboracensia v. 1 p. 96). Margery is recorded as Alan’s wife in contemporary fines. She brought Withyford into the marriage.

Salop.

Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Monday after the Annunciation, 17 Richard II.

He held the under-mentioned manors of Hagurkote, Aston Eyr and Wythiford and messuage etc. in Aldenham in his demesne as of fee.

Long before his death he granted by deed indented the under-mentioned manor of Appeley, a fourth part of the manor of Preston on Wildemor and messuages etc. in Welyngton, Whapenashale, Kynley, Halghton and Trillewardyn to John atte Wode for life, and to the executors of the said John for a year after the latter’s death. On the day of his death he held the reversion of the premises expectant on the demise of the said John.

Hagurkote. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.

Aston Eyr. The manor, held of Richard earl of Arundel, service not known.

Aldenham. A messuage and a virgate of land, held of the lord of Aldenham, service not known.

Wythiford. The manor, whereof one moiety is held of the lord of Wemme, service not known, and the other moiety is held of the earl of Arundel, service not known.

Appeley. The manor.

Preston on Wildemor. A fourth part of the manor.

Welyngton. 4 messuages, a toft, 60a. land and 10a. meadow.

Whapenashale. A messuage and a virgate of land.

Kynley. A messuage and a carucate of land.

Halghton and Trillewardyn. A messuage and a carucate of land.

The last six items are held of Hugh Burnell, knight, service not known.

He died on 6 October, 11 Richard II. Thomas his son, aged 12 years and more, is his heir.

On 22 June, 12 Richard II, the king by letters patent granted and sold the custody of the aforesaid manors of Hagurkote, Aston Eyr and Wythiford, and messuage etc. in Aldenham for 50l. to John de Harleston, clerk, Thomas de Overton, clerk, and John Bonette, to the use of Richard earl of Arundel, to hold from the time of the death of the said Thomas de Cherleton until the lawful age of his heir, together with the marriage of the said heir, and they occupied the same accordingly and took the issues and profits thereof until 15 February, 12 Richard II, on which day they granted and sold the same, to the use of the said earl, to John de Knyghtley the younger, to hold until the lawful age of the said heir. Since then the said John de Knyghtley has occupied the manors etc. and taken the issues and profits thereof.

For a year after the death of the said John atte Wode who died on 20 November, 15 Richard II, his executors occupied the aforesaid manor of Appeley, fourth part of the manor of Preston on Wildemor, and messuages etc. in Welyngton, Whapenashale, Kynley, Halghton and Trillewardyn by virtue of the grant aforesaid. On 8 February, 15 Richard II, the king by letters patent granted and sold the custody of the same for 32 marks to the aforesaid John de Knyghtley the younger, to hold from the end of the said year until the lawful age of the heir of the said Thomas de Cherleton; and he has occupied the same and taken the issues and profits thereof ever since.

Owing to the death of Thomas de Cherleton of Apley, and the minorities of Thomas son and heir of Thomas, and of Helen his sister and heir, the following came into the hands of Richard II:

Harcott, the manor, held of the king in chief by knight service, annual value 60s.

Aston Eyre, the manor, held of the earl of Arundel, service unknown, annual value 100s.

Aldenham, 1 messuage and 1 carucate, of the lord of Aldenham, service unknown, annual value 6s.8d.

Great Wytheford, the manor, half of the earl of Arundel and half of the lord of Wem, services unknown, annual value 10 marks.

Apley, the manor; Preston on the Weald Moors, a 4th part of the manor; Wellington, 4 messuages, 1 toft, 60 a. arable and 10 a. meadow; Wappenshall, 1 messuage and 1 virgate; Kinnersley, 1 messuage and 1 carucate; and Haughton and Trilwardyn, 1 messuage and 1 carucate; all held of Hugh Burnell, services unknown, annual value 100s.

She died on 1 July 1413. Thomas son of Anne, the other sister of Thomas son of Thomas is next heir, aged 22 years.

Writ: 26 January, 4 Richard II

Salop.

Inq. taken at Bruggenorth, Saturday after St. Valentine, 4 Richard II.

The said John, (as son and heir of Alan son of Alan de Charleton, knight, and Margery, his wife), held the under-mentioned manor of Hakercote in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body. The said Alan and Margery had it by gift and grant of John de Wyke, parson of the church of Great Catesden, and James de Morton, parson of the church of La Rode, made to them and the heirs of their bodies by a fine levied in the court of Edward III, with successive remainders to John, son of the aforesaid Alan knight, and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of Margery.

He held the remaining under-mentioned manors in his demesne as of fee.

Hakercote. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of providing a man on foot with a bow and 3 arrows when the king goes to Wales in time of war, to stay with the king until he has discharged his arrows against the king’s enemies.

Aston. The manor (extent given), held of the earl of Arundel by service of a knight’s fee.

Whithiford. A moiety of the manor, held of the same earl by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee; and the other moiety of the manor, held of the baron of Wemme by the like service. An extent of the whole manor is given.

Appeleye by Welyngton. The manor (extent given), held of Nicholas Burnell by service of providing an armed man for 12 days riding with the said Nicholas in the king’s service when there is war in Wales.

Kyneleye. A messuage, half a virgate of land and 1/2 a. meadow.

Preston. A messuage and a nook (nocata) of land.

Both the above he held of John de Lodlowe, knight, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.

Halghton and Tryllewardyn. A carucate of land, held of the lord of Ideshale, service not known.

Aldenham. A virgate of land, held of the lord of Cressege, service not known.

Welynton. 4 burgage tenements, 1/2 a. meadow and half a virgate of land, held of Nicholas Burnell by service of 10s. yearly.

Wapeleshale. A messuage and half a virgate of land, held of the prior of Wombrugge by service of rendering 1 lb. pepper at Christmas.

He died without heir of his body on Tuesday, Christmas day last. Thomas de Charleton, aged 30 years and more, son of the aforesaid Alan son of Alan and Margery, is his brother and is next heir.
