Roger’s 1748 marriage bond gives his occupation as bucklemaker. Parish register entries show that he was resident in Millgate, Wigan, in the 1760s and 1770s (and in 1813, if the burial record of Betty Almond, aged 77, wife of Roger Almond, was that of his wife, as seems very likely.)

Commentary
The handwriting of the signatures makes it clear that the Roger Almond who signed the marriage bond in 1748 is the same Roger who signed the marriage allegation for his daughter Betty Almond in 1798.
Roger’s parentage:
Roger was first married in 1748, when he is described as a bucklemaker. His residence is usually given as Millgate in the baptism records of his children, and the 1798 land tax redemption shows that Roger owned a piece of land in Millgate.
There are baptisms of a Roger Almond in Wigan in 21 February 1730/1, to Robert and Ann, and 1 April 1733, to Roger and Elizabeth. The 1733 baptism would make Roger only 15 years old at his first marriage, and there is other evidence which shows the earlier baptism is the right one.
Robert Almond, bucklemaker of Wigan, in his 1757 will left property in “Milngate Street” and his tools to his son Roger. Since the Roger of this page was a bucklemaker that lived in Millgate, it is clear that Robert was his father. Roger was also named in the will of Robert’s widow Ann.
Robert and Ann’s eldest child was baptized in Wigan 22 May 1726. Robert was described as a founder in the baptism entry. On 5 November 1723 Robert Almond, founder, married Ann Berchall in Wigan.
