Richard de Burgh

Justiciar of Ireland 1228-1232.

Events

Date of Birth: about 1193.

Place of Birth: unknown.

Orpen (4:159) states that Richard obtained seisin in 1214.

Date of Death: shortly before 17 February 1242/43.

Place of Death: Gascony.

The date and place are given by the Complete Peerage (12B:171 fn f).

Relationships

Father: William de Burgh, lord of Connaught.

This relationship is given by Orpen (4:159), by Smith (ODNB), by the Complete Peerage (12B:171 fn f), and by A New History of Ireland (9:170).

Mother: uncertain.

Orpen (4:159), Frame (p. 19), and Smith (ODNB) give a daughter of Domnall Mór Ua Briain, king of Thomond. However, A New History of Ireland (9:170) gives the Richard of this page a half-brother, also named Richard, and the latter seems to have been the grandson of Domnall. There have been a number of discussions on soc.genealogy.medieval about Richard de Burgh’s possible mother. There is some evidence that she may have been the illegitimate daughter of an English king (Henry II, Richard I, John), but this is far from certain.

Spouse: Egidia, daughter of Walter de Lacy. Married before 21 April 1225.

This relationship is given by Orpen (4:159) and by the Complete Peerage (12B:172 fn a). It is recorded in Richard’s inquisition post mortem (CIPM vol. 1 no. 19).

Children:

Richard II de Burgh (about 1226 - 1248) married Alice.

Walter de Burgh (about 1230 - 1271), earl of Ulster, married Avelina, daughter of John fitz Geoffrey.

William Og de Burgh (died 1270).

Margery de Burgh married Theobald Butler II.

A daughter married Gerald de Prendergast.

Alice de Burgh.

A daughter married Hamon de Valoynes.
