Commentary
A number of pieces of evidence suggest that Margaret was a Heaton, or closely connected to them:
The will of Margaret’s husband mentions that his wife had inherited copyhold land in Tottington. Margaret’s son Edward was involving in a Chancery suit in 1657 involving property in Tottington, with the plaintiff being Henry Heaton.
In his 1608 will, Lawrence Heaton of Prestwich calls Margaret his “dame” and leaves the rest and residue of his will to Margaret’s eldest son Robert, whom Lawrence also makes an executor.
In his 1624 will, John Heaton of Redivalls in Bury makes Robert Wroe of Unsworth, Margaret’s son, a supervisor.
John was probably Lawrence’s brother. Lawrence’s parents were William Heaton and Elizabeth. Elizabeth, of Dedwenclough in the Forest of Rossendale, left a 1597 will.
