Cole vs Lowe

re: Property in Chaddeswick manor, Worcestershire

from the Journal of George Fox [1655]

And I came to one Cole’s house in Worcestershire, near Chadwick who gave an Independent preacher a meeting place. And the Independent came to be convinced. And a great meeting it was; and the meeting place would not hold the people, and many were turned to the Lord that day. And this Cole, the old man, gave the Independent preacher a hundred pounds a year when he was convinced. But after he was convinced he laid aside his preaching. And then the time of tirals came, and this Independent did not stand to that which did convince him but turned back; and then the old Cole took away his hundred pounds a year from him again. And the old man died in God’s Truth. [A footnote identifies Cole as Anthony Cole. In 1690, the Quaker meeting house was adjoining the lands of Anthony’s nephew Anthony Dowbridge, which he had inherited from Anthony Cole. Anthony Dowbridge was also a Quaker.]

[Proved 3 November 1661, PCC]

The 1663 will of William Cole of the Brooke, Belbroughton mentions his brother, Gilbert Cole of Clent, scythesmith, his wife Alice, and his children. I think it mentions a relationship with Anthony Cole, gentleman of Chadwich, but I need to check this again. William’s eldest recorded son was named Anthony.

The 1690 will of Gilbert Cole is given on his page.
