Commentary

These facts lead me to believe that either Hannah Webb (or possibly her husband Benjamin Johnson) was related to Benjamin Hewling, a London merchant who died in 1684:

1660: John Peirson transferred £500 of stock in the East India Company to Benjamin Hewling.

1684: Benjamin Hewling named in his will his nephew John Pearson and his niece Hannah Pearson.

1685. Benjamin Hewling’s only two sons, Benjamin and William, were executed for participating in the Monmouth rebellion. Some descendants of Benjamin and William’s sisters subsequently gave the name ‘Hewling’ to sons, presumably in Benjamin and William’s honour and as a way of keeping the family name alive. Some examples: Benjamin Hewling’s eldest daughter married Henry Cromwell (the grandson of the Lord Protector) and named her second son “Benjamin Hewling Cromwell” in 1689. Benjamin Hewling’s second daughter Rebecca married Richard Martyn and named a son, who died in 1716, “Hewling Martin”. Benjamin Hewling’s third daughter Elizabeth married William Luson and named a son “Hewling Luson” in 1712.

[1697: Hannah Webb’s probable parents William Webb and Katherine Pearson marry.]

1750/1: John Heron gentleman of St Paul Covent Garden, the son of Priscilla Hewling, Benjamin Hewling’s fourth daughter, left all his personal estate to his cousin Mary Webb.

1752: Hannah Nugent (born Hannah Webb), wife of Henry Nugent, of the parish of St Margaret New Fish Street appeared and swore that she was acquainted with Rebecca Martyn (born Rebecca Hewling, Benjamin Hewling’s second daughter) late of the parish of St John Hackney deceased for several years next before and until the time of her death.

[1753: Hannah and Henry’s daughter Harriot Nugent married Benjamin Johnson.]

1761: Benjamin and Harriot named their second son “Henry Hewling Johnson”.

1768: Henry Nugent of Lincolns Inn gentleman and Hannah Nugent his wife swore that they had known and been aquainted with William Martin (Rebecca’s son) for the space of 15 years before and to the time of his death.

1770: Henrietta Martyn (Rebecca’s daughter) made a bequest to Harriot (“Mrs Johnson living in the Borough”). No relationship is specified, but every other recipient of a bequest in Henrietta’s will was a known relative.

1802: Benjamin and Harriot’s daughter Emily Johnson married William Martin Luson, the great-grandson of Elizabeth Hewling, the third daughter of Benjamin Hewling.

I am not sure what exactly the relationship was. Possibly Hannah Webb’s mother Katherine Pearson was a niece or grandniece of Benjamin Hewling. I don’t notice any Pearsons or Webbs in the 1701 will of Benjamin Hewling’s father in law William Kyffin. I don’t think Hannah Webb is a daughter of any of Benjamin Hewling’s daughters, and I think she is too old to be a granddaughter. Hannah Webb was said to be of Kensington at the time of her 1725 marriage, and I have not seen the registers of St Mary Abbots, the parish church of Kensington. More information may be there.
