Commentary
Isabel’s parentage:
The 1632 will of Dorothy Coxe spinster of Clent names several siblings: Isabel Taylor, Ambrose Coxe, William Coxe, and John Coxe. The baptisms of all of these are recorded in the Clent parish register in the 1570s and 1580s, which enables us to be confident we have identified the correct baptism for Isabel in 1576. The baptism entry records Isabel’s parents as Thomas and Elizabeth Coxe.
Elizabeth is identified as Elizabeth Rotten in several places. Thomas Coxe and Elizabeth Rotten were married in 1569 in King’s Norton, shortly before the baptism of Thomas and Elizabeth Coxe’s eldest child in Clent in 1571. The 1575 will of John Rotten of Moseley names his daughter, Elizabeth Coxe. It also names Elizabeth’s husband Thomas Coxe and their two children who had been born by time the will was written, Alice and Dorothy. Also, Elizabeth Rotton is given as Thomas Coxe’s husband in the 1663 visitation of Staffordshire. The informant was Isabel’s nephew John Coxe, son of her brother John Coxe.
The evidence that Isabel’s parents were Thomas Coxe and Elizabeth Rotten is sufficient.
