Commentary
Martha’s parentage:
Martha was married in 1739, her first child was baptized in 1740, and her last child was born in 1764. She must have born within about five years of 1720. In the record of her marriage at St Peter, Burnley, she was stated to be of the chapelry of Burnley.
The only baptism of a Martha Whittaker in the time period close to Burnley was the 1722 baptism at St Peter, Burnley, which records Martha’s father as George Whitacre.
George is probably the George Whitacre who married Isabel Holt in 1703 in Burnley and had six children with Isabel before her death in 1719. I have not located a remarriage for George. Perhaps his second wife came from Clitheroe, where George seems to have been living in 1722. None of this is certain, however. The George who married Isabel Holt was a tailor.
