Commentary

Many sources show Robert le Sauvage as having a daughter Hawise who married John de Gatesden, but Round, citing a 1253 British Museum charter (Campbell Ch. VIII., 22), shows that this Hawise was the daughter of Robert de Courtenay, and the widow of John de Nevill. The Sauvage property in Sussex did not pass to Hawise and John de Gatesden through inheritance from the Sauvages.
