The baptism records of his children, and the newspaper death notice of his son Samuel, state that Samuel was a bookbinder. He lived in Shrewsbury in the early 1800s -- at Castle Hill in 1801, at Pride Hill in 1806, at Claremont Hill in 1808, and “near the Cross” in 1809. In 1823 he was living in Worcester.

Commentary
Samuel’s parentage:
The register of St Clement’s Worcester records the baptism in 1764 of Samuel Mayers (parents Walter and Margaret Mayers). In 1758, Walter Mayers had married Margaret Clarke at St Clement’s Worcester. We can be confident that this is the correct baptism since Samuel gave the middle name “Clarke” to one of his daughters.
There is some supporting DNA evidence that Samuel Mayers is a son of Walter Mayers. I am a paper-trail descendant of Samuel, and I share 9 cM of DNA over one segment with a paper-trail descendant of Walter Philip Mayers. 9 cM is not a huge amount of DNA, but from the trees it appears that a Mayers connection is by far the most plausible path.
The problem is that the parents of Walter Philips Mayers, who was born about 1790 in Worcester, have not been identified, but presumably he was the son of a brother of Samuel. (Online trees often incorrectly give Walter Philip as the Walter Mayers born in 1790 in Gloucester to Samuel’s brother Walter. The Walter born in Gloucester became a clergyman at Oxford. There is a biographical sketch in a collection of his sermons.)
