Hollister gives his birth as “possibly at Selby” and “between either mid-May and early September 1068 or early February and early May 1069.”


Date of Death: the evening of 1 December 1135.

Place of Death: Lyons-la-Forêt.

Date of Burial: 4 January 1136.

Place of Burial: Reading Abbey.

The date and place are given by Hollister. Henry’s entrails were buried at the Bec priory of Notre-Dame-du-Pré.

Spouse: Adeliza of Louvain (about 1103 - 1151). Married 29 January 1121 at Windsor Castle.

The relationship, date, and place are given by Hollister. Huneycutt and Baldwin give the date as simply 1121.

Matilda (about 8 February 1102 - 10 September 1167) married (1) Emperor Heinrich V in 1114; married (2) Geoffrey V “Plantagenet”, count of Anjou, in 1127.


William “Ætheling” (23 November 1103 - 25 November 1120).


Children (by various mistresses):


Robert “de Caen” (died 1147) married Maud, daughter of Robert Fitz Hamon, lord of Glamorgan. Robert de Caen was earl of Gloucester. His mother was probably a relative of Philip Gai and Nigel, son of William.


Richard (died 25 November 1120). Richard’s mother was Ansfride, widow of Anskill.


Rainald de Dunstanville (died 1175). Rainald was earl of Cornwall. His mother is usually given as Sibyl Corbet, but Baldwin notes that the evidence for this is indirect and not conclusive. Rainald’s mother later married Herbert Fitz Herbert.


Robert (died 1172). Robert’s mother was Edith, possibly the daughter of Form, and later the wife of Robert de Oilli.

Henry (died 1157). Henry’s mother was Nest ferch Rhys ap Tewdwr, the wife of Gerald of Windsor.

Matilda (died 25 November 1020) married Rotrou, count of Perche, in 1103. Matilda’s mother was named Edith.

Juliane married Eustache de Pacy, lord of Bréteuil and Pacy, in 1103.
