from the Victoria History of Sussex (7:sub Twineham):

[Twineham Benfield}

 A John Benfeld is mentioned in 1378, and (probably another) John in 1412 and 1434–5. He was the last of the male line and the manor passed to his daughter Joan the wife of John Chauncy, and subsequently to their daughter Margaret, who married Thomas Austyn and in 1471 released her estates in Twineham to Sir Walter Pawnefold.

Commentary

There is evidence that John had a connection to Surrey. First there is this fine:

19 Edward IV [1479]

15.  Edmund Dantre, John Threle esquire, Henry Samford gentilman, John Westbroke, gentilman & Arnald Champyon v. John att Hyll & his wife Alice in Dunsfold & Hascombe.

Then, there is a 1551 court case involving John’s grandson Thomas:

Thomas Hull vs Thomas Threle, 1551, 1552 Chancery: re manor of Compton, Tongham, Runfold

Then the 1560 will of John’s grandson William Threle of Shackleford, Surrey (Thomas's brother), mentions his “friend and kinsman master Richard Bydon esquire”, his “cousin Mistress Bydon” and his “cousin Margaret Parker”. Margaret Parker was a daughter of Richard Bydon, who lived in Shackleford, Surrey. William Threle left bequests to the poor of Godalming, Puttenham, and Compton.

William’s brother Thomas Threle of Loxwood, presumably the Thomas involved in the 1551 lawsuit, made his “cousin Bydnn” the overseer of his will.

Richard Bydon, in a 1559 letter mentions his cousin Hull and in a 1564 letter mentions his cousin the late John Hull.

Putting all this together, one suspects that John Threle had a connection to the Hulls of Hambleton.
