Relationships


Father: Sir Roger Corbet of Caus.

Mother: Amice de Camville.

These relationships are given by Corbet (p.181), who is following Nichols (4:953). They are mentioned in a 1328 fine concerning the manor of Sibbesdon (Sibson) Leicestershire, which came into the Corbet family through the Camvilles, and in two fines from 1330, one from Shropshire and one from Leicestershire. Spouse: Beatrice. Died 5 October 1388.

From Nichols (4:953), citing the Chetwynd MS (The fine concerns the manor of Sibbesdon (Sibson) Leicestershire.):

"Sir William Camvile, mentioned in the fine, died without issue; so that this manor fell to Roger, the son of Roger de Corbett knight; who, in 1368, performed his homage for his lands here, in the shire hall at Leicester, to sir Robert Burdett knight, son to Elizabeth daughter and heir to Gerard de Camvile. This sir Roger (for he was knighted) was younger brother to Peter lord Corbett of Caus, and was lord of the manor of Leigh, co. Salop; who bare, Or, two ravens in pale proper, within a bordure engrailed Gules ; and had issue Thomas, who was lord of this place in 1405;"...

1 grants to 2 all his manor of Sybbesdon in Leics, together with all his other lands and tenements in the same town, and towns of Radclyf, Snarkeston, Sheynton and his manor of Arleye in Warks, Leye next to Caus in Salop, Wytspone, magna Lokeleye and parve Lokeleye and the manor of Aston Pygot in Salop and all his demesne of Modlycote and [... 1 line] the forest and chace of Caus, and all the demesne and rents of Worthyn, of Brolowe, of Wytton and Feynton, of Asterleye and Munstleye, of Walstheheme in Wales and a rent of 15 quarts of grain for animals and 3 quarts of 'Telcoyne' at 2 terms. Also the reversions of all lands and tenements where they should happen.

Given at Sybbeston, Wednesday next after the feast of St Sylvester, 2 R II.

Endorsed, 'A feoffment of all the landes of Sir Roger Corbett 2 Ri 2'.

Corbet (p. 181) quotes a fine of 12 Richard II [1388]:

“Wales.” “The King has granted to Thomas Geth junior the custody of the hamlet of Hemme in Wales, which Roger Corbet of Lyghe and Beatrice his wife both held, being in the King's hand by reason of the minor age of Thomas son and heir of the aforesaid, Thomas who at the feast of St Chad in the 12th year will be of the age of 16 years, also of the custody of the lands and tenements in the Counties of Warwick and Salop, which belonged to the same Roger Corbet 24th Feb.

She notes that lands are listed which formerly belonged to the House of Hope.

Writ of mandamus, 8 May, 19 Richard II  [1396]

Warwick

Inq. taken at Coventry, Saturday after St Barnabas, 19 Richard II.

He held the under-mentioned third part in his demesne as of fee.

Arley. A third part of the manor, held of John Rochforde, knight, by knight’s service, quantity unknown.

He died on the feast of St Chad, 4 Richard II. [1381] Thomas, aged 23 years and more, is his son and heir.

The said John Rochford, knight, and Ralph his son and heir have taken the issues and profits since the said Roger’s death by reason of the minority of the said Thomas.

Salop and the March of Wales

Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Saturday the Nativity of St John the Baptist, 19 Richard II.

He held the under-mentioned moiety and lands in his demesne as of fee, jointly with Beatrice his wife, to them and the heirs of Roger.

March of Wales

Hemme. A moiety of the hamlet, held of the king in chief by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee.

Salop.

Lyghe, Aston Pigot, Whittespone, Bromelowe, Lokeley, Asturley, Ministerley, Worthin, Modelicote and Hampton. A messuage, 2 carucates of land, 6a. meadow, 6a. wood and 10s. rent, held of the earl of Stafford, services unknown.

Fenyton. Half a virgate of land, held of the heirs of Hugh Burnell of Fenyton, services unknown.

Wytton. Half a virgate of land, held of John de Wytton, service unknown.

Date of death and heir as above.

The said Beatrice survived her husband and continued her estate in the premises until Monday after Michaelmas, 12 Richard II, [1388] when she died. Since then Thomas Gech the younger has occupied them by virtue of the king’s letters patent.
