Commentary

Makepeace et al. (2005) argue for this relationship, giving as evidence a photocopy of a schedule of title of land (Warwickshire Count Record Office D28/33) which recites the deeds related to an indenture of covenant to which Thomas’s grandson William Makepeace was a party in 1635, involving property in Northend and Knightcote, Warwickshire. Included among these deeds are a 4 January 1548/9 feoffment of property in Northend and Knightcote to Thomas Makepeace, and earlier indentures and enfeoffments involving Henry Makepeace senior and property in Northend and Knightcote. This implies that Thomas Makepeace was in a line of descent running from Henry Makepeace senior to the William Makepeace involved in the 1635 indenture.

Henry Makepeace junior was not mentioned in these deeds, but the descent would seem to have to run through either Henry junior or his brother John, who died intestate in 1545, these being the two sons Henry senior named in his will. Since John was left 160 pounds in the will, and Henry junior was left no bequests but was made overseer, it seems likely that Henry senior’s real estate passed to Henry junior. Henry junior’s son Richard signed receipts in 1549 for an annuity “to the use of the heirs of Harry Makepeace and …use of Elizabeth Makepeace, wife unto the said harry…” (Makepeace et al., p. 14, citing Huntington Library, San Marino, CA, STT (Stowe, Temple) Accounts Box 1, folder 11.)

It seems likely, therefore, that the property descending to Thomas’s grandson in 1635 from Henry senior passed through Henry junior and Thomas.
