Commentary

Identifying the parents of the wife of George Cooke took some research, as in English marriage records of the period maiden names were not usually given for widows. In the case of Elizabeth, it is possible to be confident of her identity for several reasons.

(1) We know from census and burial records that George’s wife, Elizabeth, was born in Northend, near Burton Dassett, in about 1797-1798 (census record) or 1796 (burial record). We also know that she was buried in Burton Dassett although George was buried in Napton-on-the-Hill.

(2) A check for young widows in the neighbourhood named Elizabeth of a husband surnamed Freeman turns up the marriage of a William Freeman to an Elizabeth Bloxham in 1815, in Warmington; the baptism of a daughter to William Freeman and Elizabeth in Burton Dassett in 1817; and the burial of William Freeman, of Northend, at age 23, in 1818 in Burton Dassett.

(3) An Elizabeth Bloxham was baptized in Burton Dassett in 1796, which makes her the right age (going by the burial record of George Cooke’s wife), and born in the right place (Northend was in the parish of Burton Dassett).

(4) The parents of that Elizabeth Bloxham subsequently had two children baptized in Warmington. The father was of Warmington at the time of his death in 1801.

(5) That Elizabeth Bloxham had a sister named Ann who married Thomas Chater in 1819. (Ann’s age at burial makes it possible to identify her with confidence.)

(6) At the 1815 marriage of William Freeman and Elizabeth Bloxham, one of the witnesses was Ann Bloxham. At the 1823 marriage of George Cooke and Elizabeth Freeman, one of the witnesses was Ann Chater.

(7) The Elizabeth Bloxham who was a witness at the 1811 marriage of Joseph Fields and Susanna Pain, and the 1813 marriage of John Bloxham and Mary Clifton, appears to have signed “Elizabeth” in a similar way to that of Elizabeth Freeman in the 1823 marriage record. [or maybe not…]

Everything fits well.
