Thomas Corbet of Leigh (1392 - 1480) married Isabel Burley.


Evidence


Corbet (p. 181) quotes a 1396 deed:

It gives Thomas’s lands as “one third part of Arley Manor co. Warwick”and  “half of Hemme hamlet, a messuage, two carucates of land, 6 acres of meadow, 6 acres of wood and 10s. rent in Aston-Pygot, Wethspone, Bromlowe, Lokeleye, Asturleye, Munsterleye, Worthin, Modlecote, and Hampton, half a virgate of land in Wytton co. Salop and the Marches of Wales.”


Corbet (p. 181) gives a translation of a copy of a deed:

Thomas, son of the King of England, Duke of Gloucester and Earl of Essex and of Buckingham, Constable of England and lord of Holderness, to all who shall see or hear these letters, greeting. Whereas we have by the grant of our very redoubted King Richard the Second, the custody of the lordships and lands of our very dear Cousin Edmund Earl of Stafford, as well in England as in Wales, and whereas a certain Thomas Corbet of Legh has been before our Council and claimed, by virtue of a Deed, as heir of his ancestors to have in fee the office of chief Forester of the Forest of Caus, appurtaining to the lordship of Caus, one of the aforesaid lordships in Wales, know ye, that we, having consideration for the claim of the aforesaid Thomas, have granted and do grant, as far as in us lies, licence to the said Thomas to have and to hold the said office with the fees and commodities accustomed, during the non-age of our said very dear Cousin the Earl. . . . Given under our Seal at our Castle of Plecy the fifth day of March in the 20th year of our very redoubted lord the King aforesaid.


Thomas Corbet of Lye was a justice of the peace in 1402 [Shropshire Archives 6000/6490]


A 1408 deed (A Descriptive Catalogue of Ancient Deeds v. 3):

C. 2966. Grant by John ap Harry and John atte Halle of Quystenore to Thomas Corbet, esquire, of the county of Salop, for his good and gratuitous service rendered and to be rendered to John Oldecastell, knight, of an annuity of 10 marks, out of the rents of the manor of Oldecastell. Almaly, feast of St. Gregory the pope, 9 Henry IV.

Thomas Corbet of Leigh

451 Writ 12 Oct. 1420. 

Warwickshire. Inquisition. Atherstone. 5 Nov.

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of 8 messuages and 4 virgates in Arley held of Ralph Rogheford , service unknown, annual value 40s. Long before his death by a charter dated at Arley 10 Oct. 1402 and shown in evidence he granted them to Thomas Yonge, esquire , John Shelve , David Orwe and William Cok , chaplains, who survive seised.

He died on 1 Aug. last. Thomas Corbet is his son and next heir, aged 28 years and more.

452 Writ 12 Oct. 1420. 

Leicestershire. Inquisition. Market Bosworth. 6 Nov. 

He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the manor of Sibson and in all lands etc. belonging to it in Ratcliffe Culey, Shenton, and Snarestone. Long before his death by a charter dated at Sibson on 16 Oct. 1402 and shown to the jurors in evidence he gave the manor and its appurtenances to the feoffees named in 451, who survive seised.

Sibson. The manor is held of Lord Beaumont, Lord Ferrers of Groby and Lord Lovel in socage for 2s. yearly, annual value 20 marks.
