Commentary
In her will made in 1671, Elizabeth Pryde of Standish named in order: Samuel Beard, clerk; Ambrous his brother; Elizabeth Bates the wife of John Bates; and Jone the wife of John Egolls. All four legatees received 20 shillings. They are clearly the same people as the four children of Ambrose and Elizabeth Beard baptized in Standish in the 1620s and 1630s: Samuel Beard (1624), Elizebeth Beard (1628), Ambros Beard (1630), and Joane Beard (1635). Samuel Beard’s 1703 burial record reinforces this identification. In the will he is described as a clerk, as he is in the burial record. The burial record also gives his age at death as 79, and Ambrose’s son Samuel was baptized in 1624.
Additional evidence that this parentage is correct is the fact that Elizabeth had a son named Ambrose.
