Commentary
John’s parentage:
The evidence for John’s parentage is a little indirect.
The John Wilcox of this page and his son John appear in the 1666 hearth tax returns for Enville, and no other Wilcoxes.
In his 1603 will, Henry Wilcox alias Taylor of Lutley in the parish of Enville named his sons John, Thomas, Henry, and William, and his daughters Joyce and Elizabeth. The sons are the candidates for the father of the John of this page. In her 1622 will, Joyce Wilcox of the Four Ashes in Enville named her brother William Wilcox, her sister Elizabeth Wilcox, and her brother John Wilcox and his two (unnamed) sons and two eldest (unnamed) daughters. She did not name any other nephews or nieces.
The elder John Wilcox and his wife Elizabeth are named in a Chancery pleading dating 1603-1625 dealing with land in Enville. This John Wilcox is described as “John Wilcoxe of Lutley” in the 1626 will of his wife’s father Thomas Coxe. Lutley was the residence of this John’s father Henry given in his 1603 will.
No Wilcoxes except for those named John Wilcoxe (sometimes “alias Taylor”) appear in records connected to Enville in the period.
The evidence consistently points to the parents of the John of this page being John Wilcoxe and Elizabeth Coxe, and no evidence conflicts with this.
