Commentary
Mary Ann’s parentage:
The censuses give this information about Mary Ann’s date and place of birth:
1841 (taken 6 June): age 28, born in Worcestershire.
1851 (taken 30 March): age 39, born in Stourport, Worcestershire.
1861 (taken 7 April): age 49, born in Stourport, Worcestershire.
1871 (taken 2 April): age 61, born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.
1881 (taken 3 April): age 65, born in Stourport, Worcestershire.
The informant in 1841, 1851, and 1861 was probably Mary Ann’s husband John Guest. The informant in 1871 was probably Mary Ann herself. The informant in 1881 was probably Mary Ann’s son in law Uriah Baker.
The 1871 census differs in giving Kidderminster as Mary Ann’s birth place. It also gives Kidderminster as the birth place for two of Mary Ann’s children, the birth place of whom other evidence gives as Stourport and Stourbridge, so this information should be discounted. The rest of the evidence is consistent with the record which shows a Mary Ann Goode being baptized in Lower Mitton, Worcestershire, 16 April 1813. (Lower Mitton was part of Stourport.) This record identifies Mary Ann’s parents as Joseph and Jane Goode. Jane’s marriage record gives her surname as Hammonds.
Mary Ann’s father being named Joseph fits with her second son being named Joseph.
Taken together, the evidence for Mary Ann’s parentage is satisfactory.
